PROJECT UPDATE: TAIWAN

Language: English
Date: Feb 1, 2021
Listening to: “Gaslighter” by the Chicks
With a new “SPECIAL ENTRY PERMIT FOR COVID-19 OUTBREAK” Taiwanese visa in hand, I finally feel confident telling thw world that I will be traveling to Taiwan for my Fulbright grant! It has been nearly 9 months of anticipation and learning to be flexible, and I’m ready to leave that all behind as I start my research project in a new country with open eyes and a receptive mind.

TALKING POINT: “OK, BUT WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO OVER THERE?”

Language: English
Date: Jan 22, 2021
Listening to: “Keep Your Head Up” by Preservation Hall Jazz Band
Many of my conversations in the past few months with loving friends, family, and colleagues have gone something like this:

Me: breathlessly explaining my research topic of multilingual museum exhibition design, why it’s prevalent in Asia, why it should be more common in the Great American Melting Pot, where my affiliated college is in Taiwan, and where I want to live.

Them: “...okay but what are you going to DO over there?”

Well. You got me there. Is it okay to say I’m not really sure?

INTERVIEW: CLARE BROWN, DESIGNER

Language: English
Date: June 3, 2020
Interview: Zoom Call
Clare Brown is the Creative Director at Gallagher and Associates Washington DC. She previously worked at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History as chief of design where she contributed to the Smithonian’s Accessibility Board and imagining multilingual design in the museum. She is currently working on a Ph.D. in Experience Design at the University of The Arts, London

In short, I want to be just like her when I grow up and I had a fantastic time talking to her.

OPINION: THE ROLE OF MUSEUMS ONLINE

Language: English
Date: May 30, 2020
Sources: WSJ, the Whitney, the Guggenheim
Listening to: “Fire” by Beth Ditto
With the onset of COVID-19 and subsequent closings of America’s hundreds of public museums and cultural institutions, how are these pillars of culture responding...and more importantly, who cares? What does this new relationship with technology teach us about our future abilities to outreach?

I have a few reflections on what this shift to technology is exposing about museum culture, as well as some applause to give to some institutions who are adapting quickly and pushing accessibility.
